WARESLEY
About Us

A Landmark of Waresley
The Duncombe Arms Public House stands at the heart of Waresley-cum-Tetworth as a Grade II listed building, its mid-19th-century red-brick façade and slate roof largely unchanged since Octavius Duncombe first commissioned it. Over time it has become more than just a place for a pint—it is the village’s living room, where neighbours meet, stories are shared, and local identity is forged.

The Reading Room Attachment
Directly behind the main bar, a single-storey reading room projects from the rear, its matching brick dressings and sash windows inviting natural light. Originally built for estate workers, it offered a quiet corner for newspapers, books and estate notices. Architecturally modest yet thoughtfully designed, it embodies Victorian efforts to uplift working life through accessible educational spaces.

Keeping the Spirit Alive
What began as a philanthropic initiative for estate workers has evolved into a versatile community asset. The Duncombe Arms and its reading room prove that thoughtfully designed social spaces never go out of style—they adapt. By programming talks, classes and gatherings here, today’s villagers honour the building’s past while ensuring it remains a vibrant centre for shared experience.
The Future of The Duncombe Arms
The History of The Duncombe Arms

Ian and Karen Hawthorne step through the door of the Duncombe Arms as the new custodians of village hospitality. On behalf of Nutwood Pubs, they continue the legacy passed on by the Rose family, blending tradition with a renewed spirit. Their arrival signals a recommitment to the heart and soul of a classic village pub.

A Focus on Community
At Nutwood Pubs we pride ourselves on being a part of the local community. So you can expect quiz nights, book swaps, networking mornings and painting workshops—all in the same welcoming space where friends have gathered for decades. No pretence, no fanfare—just genuine connection over pints and conversations over coffee.

Classic, Fresh, and Delicious
Nutwood Pubs believe that good food brings people together. The Head Chef, Darren, has designed a menu that will celebrate time-honoured pub favourites, prepared and finished in the kitchen. Sunday lunch has never looked so good!

The Perfect Pint, Every Time
Ian’s dedication to the pub industry means every pint is perfectly pulled. Whether you favour a crisp lager, a malty ale, or a stout, your drink will arrive looking and tasting its best. Why not try the new Duncombe Dogs Session Lager or Duncombe Rose Ale?
